Different Roads Sometimes Lead To The Same Castle

1 Jul, 2017

There are over 800 indexed castles in the UK, but only 300 classified by the presence of a substantial structure. In others words, 300 that possess some type of identifiable feature, a turret, a gatehouse, a castle wall etc. My ultimate aim is to visit everyone of these, but at the current rate, I am well on course to fall significantly short of that target. Item #83 on the list is to visit a new castle in the UK. A more accurate description would be to visit at least one castle in the UK that I have never visited before. Last year it was Warwick Castle, and this year it is Leeds Castle.

Firstly, Leeds Castle is not in Leeds. I highlight that as many people I spoke to following my visit to Leeds Castle went on to discuss aspects of Leeds that they love and hate. It is in Kent, near Maidstone, so only a short ride away.

Secondly, Leeds Castle is amazing. The castle sits in the middle of a river giving it a moat that still remains to this day. It is also surrounded by beautiful landscaped gardens that include a large maze. In addition to the castle and its grounds, they also host a birds of prey demonstration and battle re-enactments.

Although Leeds Castle may not be the largest castle, it is well worth a visit. Another positive from visiting Leeds Castle is they allow you to re-use your tickets for free up to twelve months after your initial visit. We have already been back with Hana’s parents. This item will remain on my list for 2018 as there are plenty more castles for me to tick off in the UK. It would be great to get people’s views on other castles I should check out next, so please leave your suggestions in the comments section below
