An active volcano on Tenerife is the most visited natural wonder in Spain. Crazy.

I am referring to Mount Teide. The reason I find this so crazy is the fact that I have grown up thinking volcanoes are extremely dangerous and unpredictable, thus, why would so many people go out of their way to visit one?

I suspect it may be due to the fact many people are not aware it is an active volcano. I for one was not aware. In fact, I only found out after my holiday when researching the height of Mount Teide. Thus, this items completion was a bit of a surprise. When listing this item on my list, I envisaged it being completed on my trip to Iceland. Unfortunately not.

Having rented a car for the day we decided to head towards Mount Teide and get the cable cars up to the top. The drive through the national park up to the mountain was pretty incredible with ever changing scenery and amazing views over the towns below. We continued up passed the clouds passing through landscapes resembling Mars. Once at the foot of Mount Teide, it was a 15-minute queue for the cable cars and a short ride up (not for those scared of heights or vertigo). It is then a short climb up to the summit, but we decided against this given the footwear we had chosen. The views across the clouds are unreal, but I would strongly suggest wearing something warm if you are looking to tick this one off.

From here I suspect I will be looking to conquer more mountains without the aid of cable cars.

In any case, it is another item off the list for 2015.

Mount Teide is the third highest volcano in the world.
