The French eat an estimated 500,000,000 snails a year. I have eaten three in…my whole life. The first being last Friday at L’Escargot in London.

This item was one I initially planned to tick off back in May when I visited the South of France. That did not happen, and so I decided to find a restaurant closer to home. What better place than L’Escargot? A French restaurant based in London that translated means ‘The Snail’.

In the lead up to this item, my initial perception of eating snails was of slime and jelly. That could not of been any further from the truth. The snails were chewy and any taste was over-powered by the garlic butter in which they were cooked. The overall experience was positive, but not one I would shout about. It is not one I would suggest as a must for others to pursue on a list.

If snails is something you would like to experience, then I highly recommend L’Escargot. The venue has a lovely French chic with high ceilings and hanging chandeliers. The service was quick, and the staff were very helpful in explaining how to eat the snails. We sat at the front right by the open window overlooking Greek Street. There was a large dining room at the back with a live pianist. Although the snails were the main attraction for us, our main courses and desserts were also extremely good.

For those who are following my progress, this is the eleventh item I have ticked off this year. The next item is expected to follow shortly; #67 – Sleep in my Parents Garden. In typical fashion I will leave you with another joke.

The life of a snail is taken with a pinch of salt
